Relying On God

By Rachel Head

One of the first and most important things that always pops into my mind when I think of relying on God is the ability to pray. It is so awesome that we have the ability to communicate to the highest of all Kings, who is also our Father and Creator. When we do this we are giving Him all our cares and burdens so that we do not have to bear them alone. Whenever I was younger, it still happens today, I had situations rise up like math tests, projects, or having to tell someone something bad. Whenever these situations came up, it felt like I had the weight of the world on my shoulders. It always felt good to tell someone like my mom, dad, or one of my siblings. This is how our relationship should be with God. Whenever the first sign of trouble comes up, we should take it to our god in prayer. On the other hand, have you ever been so happy about something you just want to tell everyone you encounter? I know I have done that before. Even if we are super happy, we still need to thank God for what has happened. James 5:13 says, “Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is any merry? Let him sing psalms.”

Here are two examples of people who were troubled or blessed and prayed to God because of what had happened.

1) Hannah- This example is well known but is still useful for today. Hannah was not able to conceive a child but her husband’s other wife was able to. She became very sad and troubled over this so she took it to God in prayer. Because she so fervently prayed and she vowed that the child would be given back to God, she was blessed with a child. She then prayed another prayer that gave thanks to God (1 Samuel 1-2).

2) Jesus- Even Jesus prayed for many things. He showed His disciples how to pray, He prayed for His disciples, and the one I want to focus on is when He prayed for God to allow Him to not suffer on the cross. He not only prayed just one time, He prayed three times (Matthew 26:39, 42, 44).

From these people, we can learn that whenever we have any troubles or blessings we always need to take it to God. One of my favorite songs that reminds me to rely on God is “Sweet Hour of Prayer”.

Sweet Hour of Prayer

1) Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer!

That calls me from a world of care,

And bids me at my Father’s throne

Make all my wants and wishes known.

In seasons of distress and grief,

My soul has often found relief,

And oft escaped the tempter’s snare

By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

2) Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer!

The joys I feel, the bliss I share

Of those whose anxious spirits burn

With strong desires for thy return!

With such I hasten to the place

Where God my Savior shows His face,

And gladly take my station there,

And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

3) Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer!

They wings shall my petition bear

To Him whose truth and faithfulness

Engage the waiting soul to bless.

And since He bids me seek His face,

Believe His word, and trust His grace,

I’ll cast on Him my every care,

And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
