Having the Worldview of Jesus
By Tori Harris
It’s that time of year to go back to school. Some are excited, some dread it, some are a combination of the two. For many kids and teenagers, this means going back to daily exposure of evolution in science class. I consider myself fortunate to be homeschooled, and for biology this year I am using Brad Harrub’s new biology textbook: Examining the Evidence. Something that really stood out to me in the first chapter was when it talked about worldviews.
But what exactly is a worldview? Your worldview is how you look at the world around you. It can be influenced by things such as education, upbringing, and personal experiences, and it affects multiple areas of your life. There are many types of worldviews, but one of the major ones is the biblical worldview.
A biblical worldview is held by a person who believes in God, and follows what the Bible teaches. Think of the Bible as a lens that you look through to see everything.
People with different worldviews can look at the same thing and have completely different feelings about it. Someone with a naturalistic worldview (held by a person who does not believe in God or the Bible) can use foul language and not think twice about it, while someone with a biblical worldview will refuse to talk that way (Colossians 3:8). Someone with a naturalistic worldview does not care anything about the Bible, but someone with a biblical worldview devotes time to personal Bible study, and shares the gospel with others (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Mark 16:15). People with biblical worldviews see the world like Jesus saw it.
So many people today refuse to accept what the Bible teaches, or the fact that God is real. It can be very tempting to just go with the flow, and conform to the world. But don’t let what you are being taught in school, or what people in the world tell you influence your worldview. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you prove is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Remember that there is a God who created everything (Genesis 1:1). He cares about us and has provided a way of salvation from our sins (John 3:16). Jesus was the perfect example (1 Peter 2:21-22), and we should be trying our best to follow Him and see the world as He saw it. Why would you want to turn your back on that?
