What Is Humility?
By Rachel Head
According to Merriam-Webster humility is “freedom from pride or arrogance: the quality or state of being humble.” The definition of humble is “not proud or haughty: not arrogant or assertive” and “reflecting, expressing, or offered in a spirit of deference or submission”.
This is what the world says but what does the Bible say about this topic? 1 Peter 5:5-7 says, “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.” To be exalted by God we must be humble and not prideful. We can practice humility by not talking about ourselves all the time and taking time to consider others. Not everything has to be about ourselves. A Christian is to care about others. That being said, we can still talk about ourselves if someone asks but we should not do it all the time especially to gain attention for ourselves. An example of humility is Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God and He came down from heaven so that He could save us from going to hell. This serves as a good example for us. Tabitha was also a very good example of humility. Tabitha made clothing for other people and she was very well known where she lived. When the women of the city found out that she had died, they mourned her death. She showed humility through giving to the people of the city.
Sometimes we are given the opportunities to show our humility. Do we take those opportunities or do we show our pride?
