The Need for Christian Women

By Rachel Head

Many people think that women cannot do anything in the church. They believe there is no purpose or job for them in the church. But my goal is to see why we desperately need more Christian women in the church today.

When we read in the Bible about Jesus and His time on the earth, we also read about several women who took care of Him and His disciples. They set an example for us as to how we can help serve but there are also several other passages regarding how Christian women can help in the church. I am not going to go into depth on the different ways that Christian women can serve because that will be covered throughout this month, but I want to focus on the need for faithful Christian women in the church.

In Genesis when God created woman, she was created as “an help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18). Women are to be under subjection to their husband (if they’re married) or God (Ephesians 5:22 and Romans 13:1). They are never to usurp the men’s authority in the church but instead to learn in silence. Thus, some people may think they do not have a huge role in the church but actually they have a very big purpose.

So why do we need faithful Christian women in the church? In Titus 2:3-5, it explains to us that older, more mature Christian women are needed to teach the younger women. They are to teach the younger women how to act, how to respect and serve their husbands, and how to raise up their children. This does not necessarily have to be done by teaching in a classroom but by imparting wisdom to a younger woman or taking them out to lunch and having a Bible study. Most importantly though, the older women should set good examples for the younger women to follow. Secondly, Christian women can pray for others. Yes, it may seem like a small deed but whenever something has happened in my life or I am sick it has made my day when someone sent a card or said that they were praying for me. The last need I want to point out is being able to teach the children. Most women have a gift for teaching the children while men don’t necessarily always have that. The children need to be taught from a young age about how to be a faithful Christian, and who better to teach than someone who loves God and is willing to study more about Him and then teach that to the children? Most of the time when we think of teaching, we think of a classroom but whenever we interact with children we may unknowingly teach them something just by how we act and our example.

I want to end with a verse that sums up the need for Christian women pretty well. It shows that a faithful Christian woman is invaluable and so needed. “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies” (Proverbs 31:10).
