Lessons We Can Learn from Psalm 107
By Bobbi Napier
Psalm 107 is full of wisdom that we need to apply in our daily lives. I want to look at some of those things that we can learn from Psalm 107. I encourage you to go read the Psalm before continuing on with this article.
Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever (verse 1)
How often are we thanking God? We are so blessed and we know that all those blessings are through God. How often do we get caught up in asking God for any number of things that we need but not thanking Him for all He has done for us? He did so much for us, including giving us the greatest gift of all: His Son, who died so that we have hope of eternity in Heaven if we obey Him. We know that expressing our needs to God is not wrong. He wants us to do that, but let us also remember to praise Him.
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses (verse 6)
We all will face times of trouble in our lives, but who will we turn to when times get tough? When we are going through trials in this life are we leaning on God? Or are we trying to fix it all ourselves or relying on the world? Are we turning to Him through prayer? God knows our thoughts and our needs but He wants us to talk to Him about them. Are we turning to God’s word for guidance through our time of trouble?
For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness (verse 9)
Who are we looking to for satisfaction? We often are chasing after something or thinking that something secular will satisfy us, but only God can truly make us satisfied. “He fills our hungry soul with goodness.” How do we satisfy our hunger physically? We get something to eat. The word of God is our spiritual food, so in order to be satisfied spiritually we must be feeding ourselves God’s word. Would you go days without eating any physical food? No, I don’t think so. Why would our spiritual food be any different? We need to be getting in the word daily.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke their chains in pieces…Then they are glad because they are quiet; so He guides them to their desired haven (verses 14 & 30)
Are we trusting in God’s guidance? Or are we allowing the world to be our guide? We should be putting our trust in God and following His guidance which we gain from His word. When we are going through a trying time in life we can find comfort that God will bring us through. He will help us through and we will be stronger and closer to Him when we come through it if we draw closer to Him during those times. Over and over again in this Psalm we see crying out to God in times of trouble. We can learn that we should be leaning on Him. We also see over and over again that God delivers them from trouble. We need to be leaning on God and praising Him for all He has done for us.
We can learn from this Psalm that God will be there for us in our times of trouble and trials, whatever that may be. We learn that He will deliver us from whatever we are going through. We can find comfort knowing that He will be there for us. We also see that we have so much to thank and praise Him for. He has done so much for us and continues to do so much for us in our lives, and we need to be sure that we give Him praise for that. Our God is an amazing, awesome God. I don’t think we can truly grasp just how powerful and amazing He really is. Let us take the time to recognize that, to appreciate it, and to praise Him for it! Let us think about how God has blessed us and reflect on those things rather than focus on all the bad things happening around us.
