Homosexuality: Right or Wrong?

By Tori Harris

Homosexuality is a bizarre thing that confused me when I first learned of it, and still does today. A man and a man together, or a woman and a woman? Who would want to do that? But as I have grown, I have realized that sadly, there are many people who claim to be gay or lesbian, and openly advertise it. Homosexuality has always been around (“…there is nothing new under the sun,” Ecc 1:9), but in today’s world, it is widely known and accepted by many. In today’s culture, how can we know whether homosexuality is right or wrong? When people speak out against it, others accuse them of being hateful. People claim that we are free to love whoever we want, and that it is one of our rights. But just because something is deemed legal in a country does not mean that it is right in God’s eyes. Here are two reasons that homosexuality is wrong.

  1. It goes against God’s plan for marriage. From the very being, God has made it clear of what a marriage is to consist. Genesis 2:21-24 says, “And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’ Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” It is clear that His plan for marriage includes one man and one woman for life, and that’s it (see also Matthew 19:4-6).

  2. It is condemned in the Bible. Romans 1:26-27 says, “For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.” 1 Corinthians 6:9 states, “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites.” A sodomite is another word for a person who practices homosexuality. It is very clear that God condemns this practice.

Homosexuality is defined as a type of perverted desire. Perverted is defined as abnormal, or strange. Same-sex relationships like that violate God’s law. We need to take no part in it, and stand up for God’s Word and share the truth with those around us.
