For Such a Time as This

By Rachel Head

Many of us know the story of Esther. How she became queen even though she was a Jew, how she and Mordecai dealt with Haman, how Haman was hanged, and so much more. What I would like to do is see how her life can apply to us today.

  • Esther obeyed Mordecai by not telling anyone in the court that she was a Jew (Esther 2:10). She did not tell anyone that she was a Jew until later when it was necessary that she did. The lesson that can be learned here is to always obey our parents or guardians because they know what is best for us and we are commanded to in Ephesians 6:1-3.

  • Esther and Mordecai found the person who was going to kill all of her people and dealt with that person, which was Haman. I could talk about so many different things that we could learn from this but I will only talk about a couple. Abortion has become so big in our nation but as Christians we should have a firm stand. We should be finding the people around us who believe in abortion and help them to understand that it is not ok to have abortions because that is killing an innocent child. We have to educate them on what is right and what is wrong. Another thing is using foul language. It seems like I cannot get away from people who use really bad language when I am at school. So what I usually do is just use my Christian-like language and try to be an example to them so that one day when they ask, “hey why do you not use any of these bad words?” I can tell them that it is not becoming of a Christian to use that language.

  • Esther acted so upright and pleased pretty much everyone, including the king. She had the king’s favor the couple of times that she went to his throne to ask him to a banquet. Are we upright? Do we have God’s favor? If we do, one day when we approach His throne we will go to Heaven and I believe that will be such a great reward for living that Christian life.

In conclusion, if we do not say anything about all of the sin going on in this world, we should expect that sin will take over and we will not get our heavenly reward. But if we stand up for what is right like Esther, we can make a difference.

Esther 4:14: For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
