Be a Light

By Rachel Head

On March 30, 2020, Thomas Rhett released a song called “Be a Light.” He released it right after the virus hit, hoping it would encourage people to be a light in dark places. He brought out quite a few points we can apply as Christians and I would like to look at them.

”In a time full of doubt, just believe”

Throughout our lifetime, we will go through so many hard things but how we react is what is important. We may not know what is going on or how things are going to end up but we have to keep our trust in God. Job went through a lot in just a short amount of time but who did he have his trust in? He did struggle a lot with the thought of wanting to die and questioning God, but overall he had his trust in God. At the end of Job 1, Job states: “Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (vs 21). At the end of the book, God blesses Job more than what he had beforehand because Job had his trust in God.

“In a world full of hate, be a light”

This world is full of so many evil things and it is only going to get worse if we don’t help make a stand against it. We can start by knowing whom we believe in and have a firm foundation in that. If we are like the foolish man who built his house on the sand, we will not last long but if we build our house on the rock, we will be able to stand firm even when the world tries to beat us down. John 1:1-5 tells us who we should believe in and why we should believe in Him.

“In a place that needs change, make a difference”

Many of us have jobs, go to school, and do other things where we are surrounded by the world. We have to be making a difference and being a Christian example every second of the day. In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus talks about the goats and the sheep. The sheep on His right hand did not even realize that they were ministering directly to the Lord by ministering to others. Let’s look at verse 40, “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” It was so ingrained in them to serve others that they did not realize that they were serving the Lord through that. Part of making a difference is ministering to others so that through us they can see the Lord. We should not be taking any of the glory for it but instead giving it to God.

Let’s be encouraged to be more of a light in the world so that one day not only can we go to Heaven but we might can encourage others to become Christians and they can be lights in the world as well.
